An Apology to Steven Curtis Chapman
Tuesday, February 24, 2009
In a message last week, I made reference to the book, The Shack. My goal was twofold. First, I wanted to quote from the book and demonstrate how dangerous the theology presented therein has been to the body of Christ. Second, I wanted to demonstrate how widespread the deception and heresy presented in The Shack has become by identifying some of the “big names” who have endorsed the book. (for a look at the dangerous, insidious, heretical nature of The Shack, look here, and here)
Unfortunately, as I spoke, I juxtaposed the names of Steven Curtis Chapman and Michael W. Smith in my head. It is one thing when I do this with their songs (as I have often done in the past). It was quite another thing when I did it in relation to the very dangerous book. It was Michael W. Smith (and not Steven Curtis Chapman) who said:
The Shack is the most absorbing work of fiction I've read in many years. My wife and I laughed, cried and repented of our own lack of faith along the way. The Shack will leave you craving for the presence of God. --Michael W Smith, Recording Artist
I am terribly sorry for identifying Mr. Chapman as the artist who endorsed The Shack. I have neither seen nor heard anything to that effect. I have the utmost respect for Mr. Chapman’s work. I am especially encouraged by his efforts in adoption. If I had his contact information, I would call him personally (and I hope to), but since the offense was public, the apology should also be public. I am truly sorry.

For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in TRUTH
